September 2007 | Long story to be told at unique Ropery |
|
| Scheduled as an Ancient Monument, listed at Grade 1, and sited within a prospective World Heritage Site - the Ropery is truly unique complex of early manufacturing buildings which form part of a larger - and equally unique - group of buildings of the Age of Sail at The Historic Dockyard at Chatham. Today it is the only traditional working ropery to survive anywhere in the world - and one that can claim an unbroken record of production that extends back some 389 years to 1618. Following competition, Continuum has been commissioned to work with The Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust to provide design and interpretation services. The interpretive design will need to work alongside the physical nature of the existing historic building, support and interpret the building, the rope-making processes and most importantly deliver people stories that relate to them. A key objective of the project is to establish the Ropery as a core part of the visitor experience and the must see attraction at The Historic Dockyard.
