JUNE 2011 - The Sweet History of York |
|
| York based cultural visitor attraction group, Continuum is in discussions with the landlords of York House, Kings Square, York, in order to create an exciting new visitor attraction for the city. Oakgate Group PLC are currently applying to York City Council for ‘change of use’ planning permission for the premises for use as a visitor attraction and associated uses including retail and café. The 6,400 square feet of available space on three floors is part of a larger building, owned by Oakgate; an existing bookshop will remain. Continuum, experts in developing and operating visitor attractions, currently operate the £35m 170 metre high Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, the award winning Real Mary King’s Close in Edinburgh, The Canterbury Tales in Canterbury, Oxford Castle- Unlocked in Oxford, and Kent Life, a 50 acre heritage farm park near Maidstone. Continuum, originally called Heritage Projects, was founded in York in 1984 when the team were instrumental in creating, opening and operating the Jorvik Viking Centre – (which they ran for the York Archaeological Trust for eighteen years). Jorvik’s development led the company into creating and operating a multitude of high profile cultural attractions. The theme of the new attraction will reflect the fascinating story of the city’s trading and manufacturing past and, bringing that history up to date, present the story of the science and manufacturing of confectionery in the city. In short - a chocolate themed visitor attraction with the working title - The Sweet History of York. Detailed designs are being briefed out to a number of award winning specialist design companies. Juliana Delaney, Chief Executive of Continuum commented: “There is still along way to go. However, reports produced by the Council call for additions to the tourism offer in the city and we hope to add value to the fantastic visitor experience the city already offers and give visitors a reason to come back. We hope to add over 30 new jobs to the economy and add to the early evening economy too; all positive news. Indeed, already we have received support from the City Council, Science City York, several of the city’s biggest companies, Visit York and Welcome to Yorkshire for the project. We very much look forward to being given the opportunity to deliver!” |
