December 2007 | Wearmouth-Jarrow World Heritage Site Application

The twin Anglo-Saxon monastery of Wearmouth-Jarrow has been named by DCMS as the UK's nomination for World Heritage Site status in 2009. The site is significant for its association with the Venerable Bede in the 7th and 8th Centuries and as a cultural institution is noted for its influence across the western world.

The churches of St Peter, Monkwearmouth in Sunderland, and St Paul, Jarrow in South Tyneside, still contain parts of Benedict Biscop's original buildings, and would form the centre of the proposed Heritage Site.

Tyne & Wear Museums have asked Continuum to assist them in achieving their aims. The brief covers two aspects of work; the first requires the preparation of an Interpretive Plan as part of the Nomination Document for UNESCO setting out the Statement of Outstanding Universal Value, and the second is the design, development and implementation of interpretive displays and materials at St Peter’s Church in Monkwearmouth as part of the Pre-Nomination Action Plan.
